'Get busy living or get busy dying' Stephen King
I don't know about "soul" mates, but I have an opinion about "one and onlys", if that counts :) Someone I respect once said that there are lots of people out there who could be our "one and onlys." Many who we would be happy to live with for the rest of our lives. When they become "one and onlys" is the day we commit to each other. Then there is nobody else for us - - just our "one and only." I liked that . . . a lot :)
Ready for a long answer? There was a very popular play among Mormons when I was growing up. This play put forth the notion that we pick our mates in the life before earth and we come here to search out and find that 'One'. I grew up believing this completely. It wasn't until I was out of high school that I finally realized that there are many people who we could be happy with. I like what Judy said. I'm sure there are other men I could have married and built a beautiful life with. But, once I got married, my husband became 'it'. After 20 years together, we are definitely soul mates, because our souls have grown so close that I can't imagine ever being without him.
Can soul mates mean something other than the one person to spend the rest of your life with?
Can they be a person you connect with but still remain platonic? Can our closest friends be soul mates? Parts of a soul divided many times reconnecting to bring our the best in each other? (just musing)
I don't know that I believe in soul mates- I'm more along the lines of what Judy said, that we COULD be happy and have a "one and only" relationship with many different people. What do YOU think?
I used to think that there was just one person for each of us. One soul mate and if we managed to find that one person we were lucky.
The more I read, the more I think, the more I think I may have been wrong. It is good to find out what other people think.
I wonder if perhaps there are many 'soul mates' for each of us out there. People that we connect with on a basic level. Those friends that think the same way as we do or finisih our sentences. May be any one of those soul mates could be 'the one' that we fall for and make the decision to be with for eternity?
I don't know if there is just one... The world has over 7 billion people and many people don't even leave their home state, so they never get to meet the other soul mates they have in the world.
I do think that there are people that you just click with and that you are suitable to be in a relationship with for life.
I also agree that there are soul mates that are not your lovers... that are people that are your true friends that you just mesh with.
a.eye has a way with words and so clearly expressing her thoughts, doesn't she? I agree with her. I also agree with the notion that we meet people who become our soul mates over time because our souls share so many experiences, thoughts and emotions, etc.
I think you have to work at any relationship, though, to make it happen, no matter how well you initially mesh. Sometimes it's just easier and more fun to work at it, eh? :)
You can click or mesh with many people but if you don't make an effort to put the time in to the relationship (friend or lover) it will never last forever, soul mate or not!
Thanks for sharing your views, I'll keep you posted if it developes as I hope ;-)

Not far behind you at 16 years. I am glad I found my 'one' early and didn't have to search too hard.

Or may be I am just grasping at straws?!?!?!?

I love reading everyone's different views on this subject, it all goes to help the little idea developing in my mind ;-)
